Notes

About the workshop:

As people working with people struggling with poverty, violence and oppression we are often told that we will “burn out”.  The compassionate care that we provide as workers is seen as naïve, immature, unprofessional, and something that we will “get over”. Often, there is a belief that clients are responsible for harming us with their pain. However, most of us express that this is not the case and instead voice that the aspect of our work that leaves us feeling the most defeated relates to structural issues of injustice. This does not allow the care required to address suffering to be provided. In contrast, we can create a story of how collective work sustains us! How it nourishes our hope, invites us to honour the resistance and strength we witness in the people we work alongside and allows the opportunity to use collective accountability to work congruently with our collective ethics.
